Rainier Fassbinder has written and directed the story of a Moroccan auto mechanic who meets an older German cleaning woman. They fall in love and marry. What follows is the story of their love, the hostility, condescension, and even hate they experience from the families, friends and neighbors, and their endurance throughout. There are further difficulties. Ali, the Moroccan, misses the traditional food of his country and the love-making which Emmi, his wife, cannot provide. Culture, traditional, society, age-difference—all take their toll on this sad couple and the story does not hold back in its portrayal of their sad lives.
