Nan White and Cindy Spencer
Our Featured Artists for January and February 2012

Nan White participated in the first art show in the valley in 1962 on the front lawn of the Eastern Slope Inn.  She continued to paint, winning awards for her work and was instrumental in founding the Friday Painters in the 70s, a group which continues to paint on a regular schedule throughout the year.  Her paintings of New England landscapes are simple, "juicy" and bold and more  can be seen by arrangement with the Mount Washington Valley Arts Association.

Cindy Spencer, a retired Elementary School teacher, moved to the valley in 1979.  Though she had begun in oils, Cindy enjoyed the wonderful watercolors of the area artists.  She began painting with the Friday painters and met Nan, who became her mentor, teacher, and friend.  Cindy's watercolors can be seen at the 302 Gallery in Bridgton, Maine or on her website www.cindyspencerart.com

In later years, Nan began to need assistance and Cindy visited, shopped for and assisted Nan in many ways, helping her to move from her Grove Street home and to adapt to life in a nursing home.  Nan was excited about the duo exhibition at the Freedom Library and helped select some of the work here.  She died on December 26, 2011.   We think you'll enjoy the fresh and colorful work done by the two women who found happy times with a paintbrush in hand and in the company of each other.
