A Really Good Book. You could actually learn a lot from these families. There are so many different situations in the book, especially by looking at the different families, Two whose parents are divorced, one who is adopted, One who has travelled around the world, etc. The stories also keep the same girls in each book, just from different points of view. A Mercy -

- Give the book a good chance, it will grow on you. Each chapter takes on a particular character's voice, and that's a good thing to know before you read. Go back in time and imagine a life of slaver or indentured servitude. Do you think you could handle it? Will you be pulled from the picture before your time? Build up something that will only wilter and fade away?Reviewed by: Mike from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)

This book is very detailed and thorough and really covers life in the wild. The unexpected twists and turns this book takes is awesome. Outtakes from a Marriage -
Fiction -
- Ann Leary's (comedian Dennis Leary's wife) book is narrated by
Julia, a Manhattanite mother who is married to a famous actor
and trying to deal with the possibility that he may or may not be
having an extramarital affair. Leary includes some interesting
social commentary about the "preschool mafia mothers", celebrity
stalkers, and Upper West Side wives. However, the narrative jumps
around too much, the character development is weak, and Leary's
commentary can get boring. For the same type of novel without
the dull points, I would suggest a Jennifer Weiner title or a funny
chick lit novel by Marian Keyes.Reviewed by: Caitlin from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
Over the Edge -

By reading his emails and diary she is able to contact his partners and, for reasons I can't fathom, find out the full details of his amorous adventures. She is quickly involved in other relationships herself, so I guess the marriage was not "Perfection" for either of them. Who cares? Reviewed by: lee from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)

- This riveting noir thriller is based on a true crime in 1947 Los Angeles. The City of Thieves -

What a great read!Reviewed by: Sharon from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
The Daybreakers -

The Devil's Punchbowl -

There are lots of twists and turns. The characters were likeable and it really kept me at the edge of my seat. This was definitely worth reading, and I can't wait for book two to come out next month. The Leper -
Fiction -
- Don't let the title scare you away. The main charater's journey, after contracting leprosy during World War I, is awe inspiring. This is a story worth reading.Reviewed by: Sharon from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
The Leper -
Fiction -
- In a word trite. The rain, a desire to learn something about the plight of lepers and nothing else better to do, kept me reading to the end. Character and plot development were so poor, that I knew before it happened, what was going to be. Therefore, I found myself reading first and last sentences of paragraphs and chapters. I only recommend, if you are interested in getting an idea of the social isolation of those poor souls who in the near past, were diagnosed with leprosy. The Mayor of Casterbridge -
Fiction - Classic
- This Mayor is a fascinating character, self-absorbed, selfish, whiny, and flawed in ways that damage everyone he meets, and finally bring him down. Modern day soap operas have nothing on this 19th century drama of secrets and lies. I listened to this book and loved the reader, whose accents nicely portray the farm country people of Hardy's midlands England.Reviewed by: Peg from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)

The Partners -
Fiction -
- Grisham is a good story teller. However, his characters are all liars, cheats and scum -even the heros. We have lowered our expectations of politicians, priests, lawyers, etc. to a point where we can no longer be surprised by any of their antics. How sad.Reviewed by: Elizabeth from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
The Pretend Wife -
Fiction -
- The Pretend Wife is a fun read. However, it was a predictable book...very similar to a Danielle Steele novel. If you like that type of book, you'll like The Pretend Wife.Reviewed by: Ellen from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
The Rustlers of the West Fork -
Fiction - Westerm
- A good Western, that's about the best I can give it. Had a lot of action and shooting, but it was just your basic western. I'm not that into westerns, even though this was a good one, there were times where I didn't want to read any more, or didn't care what happened. Also this book was so easy to predict. My eight year old brother could tell you what's going to happen from the first chapter. This book is part of a series, so maybe if I read the other books I might enjoy this one better, but I'd rather not take the chance. The other two Lamour books that I've read, The Walking Drum, and The Last of The Breed, have been great books, this one just didn't meet the standard. The worst part though is his name, Hopalong. How much worse can it get.Reviewed by: Jes from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
The Scarlet Letter -
Fiction - classic
- Very good, but I think it's better to hear it on audiobook while reading. Dimmesdale was too weak for me to like and Hester was strong but desperate. The only one I liked was Pearl. I Love A Man In Uniform
NonFiction - Memoir
- I was looking forward to reading about that uniquely valuable creature, the military wife.
Other than learning the PTSD is now contagious (!), Lily quickly reverts to feminist/liberal twaddle, with obligatory shots at Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld(ho-hum); her agonies over Abu Ghraib (I don't recall any of the prisoners being beheaded); gays in the military, whose "struggles" she equates to those of Blacks' civil rights - a comparison NOT appreciated by those blacks; women in combat; and, winds up with her hopes of a diverse military. Spare me!
In short, a waste of time. I could have gotten the same garbage by watching "The View" (no way, Jose), or listening to the left wing clowns now running the country. (NO stars)Reviewed by: Norm from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)

What could have been a fascinating look at the psychological effects of captivity and an insider's glimpse into the minds of terrorists, is hampered by the ghostwriters' mediocre writing. Daily life (marches through the jungle) is described in great detail, but the story raises more questions than it answers. Why has Columbia degenerated to a point where FARC holds hundreds of hostages at any given time? How does FARC operate? What do the soldiers look like/wear/think? - I love this story! Whenever I talk about it with other people, they always say they disliked it. But I couldn't put it down. I think my favorite scene is Simon in the field opening. Of course my two favorite characters are the only ones who die on the island. Long live the magic conch which was destroyed. Stupid boulder.Reviewed by: Christina from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)

- Greek mythology at its young adult, fictional best. I love this book! It's about this girl who loves to run and has to attend a new school in Greece because of the speedy marriage of her mother. Out of the Shadows -
Teens -
- A compelling novel about a time when religions and loyalties mattered the most and talk of faeries were heresy. It is a creative read. Besides Marie Brennan, I hadn't read an author who used the Elizabethean age for a faerie novel. Singleton creates her own version, making the shadow world where the crow people live. Isabella will rock your socks off (If that phrase means anything) with her courageous attitude. The ending was well-deserving. If you read it, you'll know what I'm talking about. So you'll just have to read it if you're curious.Reviewed by: Christina from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)

Perfect Chemistry -
Teens -
- I love this story! By far the greatest "Romeo and Juliet/West Side Story" type of story ever! And the ending was amazing. If you got annoyed with how swift and melodramatic Romeo and Juliet was, then read this to soothe your mind of that plot. Definitely one to read over and over again.Reviewed by: Christina from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
Plan B -
Teens -
- This book seemed random if anything. About a girl who finds out she has a bad boy actor for a half brother and how it affects her. It was well written, but I think it skimmed over certain parts and overly described others. Read if you want a strong main character and are sick of ditzy ones. Reviewed by: Christina from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)

Romiette and Julio -

- A nice story involving the star-crossed lovers plot line, I actually didn't throw it at a wall in a fit of anger like I do to the Romeo and Juliet play. Just kidding about that. Draper's stories always keep me reading, even if I shouldn't be. This story was no exception. The ending wasn' half-bad, either. Reviewed by: Christina from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)

Something to Blog About -
Teens -
- So annoying! You figured out everything just by looking at the cover. This girl has a blog to vet out her "problems" to the virtual world, hoping that it will never be seen in public. Which, by definition of cliche, it will be spread by her nemesis. Also there's this unattainable boy who "doesn't even know she exists", who "magically falls in love with her". I would suggest reading The Secret Blog of Raisin Rodriguez if you like blog books but hate this one.Reviewed by: Christina from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)

- Like all of Kittredge's books, this one was suspenseful and stunning. I love it! The first of the Black London series. That Furball Puppy and Me -
Teens -
- I thought that "Furball Puppy and Me" was a good book. I liked how the authors used "Gray" the cat as the narrator and main character. Katniss volunteers for the game to protect her sister, while Peeta, her team mate, is chosen along side her. While reading, it made me think about the connection with modern society and the government that ruled with certain fears. Thirteen Reasons Why -
Teens -
- Heartbreaking and illuminating, this story is about the tapes that states the thirteen reasons why Hannah decided to kill herself. I didn't feel so much pity for Hannah as I did for realization that all things we take as a joke aren't as funny to other people as they are to us. Clay was, for Hannah, the only one who could help her. She admitted that herself in the story. But still a sad novel about how this girl was pushed around by those "close" to her. Hannah is a strong character, and I greatly admire her, even if she is fictional. Who said there can't be any fictional idols?Reviewed by: Christina from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)

- Left me speechless. About a misunderstood, completely underestimated boy who is bullied by everyone, even his brothers, all because of an accident involving his friend. - Great novel. Read if you like the somewhat comic book-mixed-with supernatural subtleness. Stupifying. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It's about this boy named Locke who doesn't get angry, he gets into fits of blinding rage. He names the persona the Venom, something he has to admit to himself is inside him and apart of him. Moving and enthralling. Think about people before you judge them. Or else face the venom.Reviewed by: Christina from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)

- Mind boggling. Janie is a girl who can enter people's dreams, whether she wants to or not. Life is a nightmare for her and all she wants is control. Then Cable comes along, an old friend, and soon she's close to figuring out how exactly to survive these dreams. This book really makes you think about how crucial dreams are and what they are made of. Some are nightmares relived, while others are fantasies just waiting to happen. - A book that really makes you think about how quickly situations can change with just one accident. Natalie's sister, Claire, got into a car accident and became brain-dead. In the beginning, it was carefree. Natalie's friends reminded me of mine. The book really made me thnk about what was okay to say and when to stop joking around. - Another cliche love story. After reading Davis's books, there is a recurring theme in it where the heroine likes someone older but ends up despising them and loves the guy we all know that will end up with the heroine.
